Immigration? Hi, I have to write a compare/contrast essay on the immigration situation in the late 19th/early 20th century compared to the immigration situation to now. My book has everything I need on the situation in the time period stated, but I am not sure on the immigration situation today. Could anyone maybe give me a few points on what it is like today or maybe some websites? Thanks in advance for any help.
What do immigration attorneys actually do? I am planning on applying for law school soon, and I think I want to go into immigration law. The problem is, I have an idea in my head of what an immigration attorney does all day, but that might not necessarily be the reality of the job. Are there any immigration attorneys who can tell me how they spend their day?

How can I start a business in Immigration? I am trying to start my own business in the Immigration field. I have 6 years of heavy experience in regards to Immigration and its laws. I have worked with various prestigious Immigration attorneys and other organizations. I have finally decided to become my own boss. However, I have received very little information on how to start my own business. I have heard that there are grants that the government provides, but I don't know where to go. I have searched the internet and have found very little. If any one of you can advice as to where to go or where to call, that will be very helpful. By the way I live in Dallas, TX and the competition is great, however, my ideas as to how to run the business are not liked by attorneys or organizations because they don't like to have payment plans. Please help in any way you can.
How does immigration work crossing from Detroit to Canada? I will be travelling from Detroit into Canada on a Greyhound bus, and want to know more about the immigration process. Thanks I'll be travelling into Canada from Detroit on Greyhound for a short visit, and want to know how the border crossing formalities work. I am a UK citizen, with a flight home already booked.
What does legal immigration have to do with illegals? I keep hearing people wanting to change laws and do things who's effect really applies only to legal immigrants and not illegals. How does stopping all immigration help stop illegal immigration? It bothers me when people disguise their anti-immigration agenda with fighting illegals.
What can the average American do about illegal immigration issues? I think it's pretty obvious by now that illegal immigration hurts any country (whether it's the U.S. or the U.K.) in many ways. I am all for stopping illegal immigration, and doing it humanely, but it seems like our government is too focused on foreign problems. What can we as average citizens do to make our voices heard on this issue? Do we need to write our Senator, our Congressman, the President? How do we make our voices heard? I would like to align myself with an organization that is firm but not extreme. Frankly, some of the organizations that I've looked for on the net do seem racist, don't really seem to offer any solutions, and just seem content on complaining. I am all for a humane and fair way of handling this, but we've gotta stop being wimps. We need more action and less complaining.
What do you think would be the best change to the immigration bill, and why? I know this guest worker plan is a big joke, but seriously, if there should be any change, what should it be? I consider these changes essential before we can talk about changing the current bill. 1-Build a wall between Mexico and the US, 2-Allow all law enforcement the right to enforce the Federal laws of immigration. The problem is too big for each level of government to work on it independently. 3-Make Mexico enforce immigration both ways. 4-Stop any non-profit org, or anyone, in aiding illegals. 5-Reward those who have applied for legal immigration since they are supporting our laws. 6- Force each would-be immigrant to be mentored by a US citizen for at least three years. OK, all the others might not be essnetial, but I do feel we must show we can enforce the current laws before we move onto any changes. The only reason why we do not have them enforced is the "look the other way" policy. What do you think?
How long will an application for immigration in Australia take? I'm thinking of applying for an immigration in australia, specifically, as a skilled individual. I am from the Philippines and I passed their assessment actually. I'm thinking now of hiring a consultant but I'd like to have an idea of how long the process will take.
Can applying for food stamps affect the immigration status of a permenant resident married to a US Citizen? My husband is a US citizen and we are going through a temporary hard time financially. We are contemplating applying for food stamps for short term use and were wondering if that will affect my immigration status or application for renewal for perminant resident status. I went through the DORA pilot scheme in Dallas and have a 2 year perm. resident card, before June 08 I will go to an interview to get a 10 year perm res. card after which I can apply for citizenship.
What can a person do when their immigration status has been pending? What can a person do when their immigration status has been pending for 6yrs? Background is clean never been in trouble with the law. Is their away they can look to see what’s going on? What can the person do to expedite their process? Why not raise the penalty for illegal immigration to at least a felony? Since it costs the taxpayers so much, and so many illegals are imprisoned etc., and all of the other negatives that go with it, shouldn't they at least raise the penalty for illegal immigration to a felony level. Seems like Congress was thinking about doing this at one time. It would perhaps make illegals think twice, if they knew they would be facing stiff jail sentences and high fines.
What immigration forms will I need to fill out? I am from Europe and I have just married a US citizen. I am about to file to immigrate to the US in San Diego, California on an "adjustment of status" (I-485). Does anyone have a complete list of all of the forms that I will need to fill out for immigration purposes?
What is the best way to remind immigration caseworkers to hurry up? Is calling them on the phone the best way? We recently sent some letters to the immigration authorities, and were told to fax in the letters instead - yet found it was impossible to do so - we tried it! What numbers should be called? One of those 800 numbers that they have, or something different?
What is the process immigration puts a foreigner that marries a Citizen through? I've been dating a girl for some time, I'm a US Citizen. She entered the country legally but overstayed her visa. We've lived together for some time, and want to get married. I've heard that immigration, in order to avoid fraud, aims to 'test' your marriage with a lot of questions and tests based on a 'traditional' marriage. We are anything but a traditional couple, and are quite open about a number of things. I worry that if I marry her, we will not pass their conservative perceptions, for a number of reasons, and I worry that instead of doing well for both of us, she may end up getting deported or at the very least unfairly hassled. What kinds of 'tests' does immigration put the spouse of a US Citizen through? Interviews? Home-visits? etc. etc.
What is your state doing about illegal immigration? I live and own a busness in Arizona and my state is doing all it can to stop the flow of illegal immigration. What is your state or city doing? Is it a problem in other states that dont share a border with another country? INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana House Republicans said Tuesday they will seek legislation designed to crack down on illegal immigration in the state. Rep. Eric Turner, R-Gas City, said Republicans hope the plan will have a "chilling effect" on the flow of illegal immigration in Indiana. Some of the proposals are designed to ensure that state agencies comply with federal laws by denying illegal immigrants public benefits such as assisted housing, post-secondary education, unemployment assistance, and health care paid through Medicaid. Another provision would require the Indiana State Police to seek a pilot program with the federal government that would broaden the authority of troopers to investigate immigration violations and detain illegal immigrants. House Democrats say they're against illegal immigration, too, but that the Republicans' plan won't work because it doesn't include extra penalties for employers who hire the illegals. We own property in Carmel,IN,so this is good news
Where can i find a good UK immigration lawyer? I would like to get in contact with a non-bias immigration officer because im starting to believe they just dnt want anyone else in the country. I dnt want to sound rude but im just coming for my gurl, not the country.
What is the democrats plan on illegal immigration? All the sitting Democrat Senators who are pursuing the presidency already endorsed a very detailed plan for "comprehensive immigration reform" when they voted for cloture on McCain/Kennedy back in June. Although it never used the word "amnesty," McCain/Kennedy allowed for a form of amnesty with its Z Visas. That's why virtually everyone outside the United States Congress and the White House vigorously opposed it.
What will it take to stop illegal immigration? Of course by "illegal immigration", I am mostly talking about illegal Mexicans, because they are the biggest threat at this point. What is the problem here? Why won't the represenatives who we, "The People", voted into office listen to what we are saying. Well over 70 percent of AMERICANS want something done about this issue. Honestly, what is it going to take? Is our President, his staff, our senators, and reresenatives, forgetting why they were elected into office, and who they answer to. They are supposed to be representing the people.... Why are they not doing what the majority of legal citizens want done? Is it time the people stand up for what they want, and let it be known that we still have a voice in this country? When I talk about the people who represent us, I'm talking about all political parties. So don't go blaming it on President Bush, and his administration. May I remind you, that it's mostly democrats who want amnesty!
What is the answer to the illegal immigration people who overstay their Visa? It was pointed out that 75% of the illegal immigrants coming into the US enter the country legally with a US Vistors Visa, and then refuse to leave when the Visa expires. This represents 75 of the problem. What can/should we do to stop the biggest part of the illegal immigration flood, and those that are already here on expired Visa?
How do you get rid of illegal immigration? I keep hearing that you are after illegals. Do you have any idea what the policy implications would be. You can beef up boarder security, but how do you find the illegal aliens that are already here. It would be impossible, or just as expensive as the war on drugs and we all know how thats going. Are we gonna have commercials. "Illegal immigration Kills". Yeah, Nancy (Reagan) can sponsor it. Its a shock to me also that you tight wad Republicans want to spend the kind of money it would take to get rid of illegal aliens, but dont mind cutting social security benefits. You have some very twisted priorities. Wow. No real answers huh? Less than I expected from all the bright people on here. (that was sarcasm) Illegal immigrants cant recieve social programs because they are illegal. Try again. I seriously think that we should take all that money and dump it into the educational system. These answers are horrible. does anybody have more than 1 brain cell out there?
Did immigration actually destroy the American Dream instead of helping it? Without immigration, this country would be one of the best to live in the world. Because we accepted shiploads of people over years, this country is now a cesspool. England and Canada are getting worse too. Australia is a great country, there is virtually little immigration allowed. As a result, you don't really even have to worry about locking the doors or worrying about where you walk at night. If there was limited immigration here, people would be able to find jobs and there wouldn't be any ghettos. Immigration and outsourcing factories is a total recipe for disaster. Who the F has been running our governments for years?
Why do some people think illegal immigration is a Democrat vs. Republican issue? Don't assume that legal hispanics are going to vote democratic just because of the illegal immigration issue. Most legal hispanics are against illegal immigration.Oh and people bring up that democrats will get the hispanic vote but you must understand how many white voters they have lost due to their illegal immigration stance. Add black voters to my last sentence as well.
Has the immigration debate ever been such an intense topic as it is now? I know illegal immigration has been a problem for many decades now, but in this new age of technology (Internet, YouTube, Yahoo Answers!,etc) were information on topics and issues is easily shared and passed around and people have more access than ever to see for themselves at what's happening with the nation, has the debate been this intense? I think this new round in the immigration battle may finally lead to some form of change with immigration. We've been trying to end this problem for years but it seems only recently that Americans have finally stood up as one and said 'Enough' What do you think?
How can i bring my girl from Texas to California without immigration checkpoints? My girl just came to the U.S.A. but entered thru Texas, and i am livining in CA. please help me and tell me how i can bring her to CA, my biggest fear is she getting caught by immigration and send her away again. I was planning on having her travel on the Grayhound, but please somebody tell me where she needs to go without risking getting caught my immigration. I will thank you very much.
What can we as citizens do to discourage illegal immigration? Illegal Immigration is out of control. An estimated 12 million people are in the United States illegally. Answers that incite hatred or insult others will be reported. Bubba consider yourself reported. My question is not here to incite hatred and will not incite hatred. Thanks for those who actually answered my question. I've given thumbs up to the person that I will choose as best answer. When I am allowed to choose a best answer, I will resolve the question.
How many immigration applications could the US process in a year? I have no idea how many illegal immigrants who come would want to do so legally and I don't care. The point is that we have no real immigration policy to enforce. Either you give immigrants wishing to come legally a fair and reasonable opportunity to do so (Ellis Island ring a bell?) or you set a limit on how many legal immigrants you'll accept and then enforce restrictions on the rest. The "Land of Freedom and Opportunity" doesn't have the same ring if you add, "but only for those of us who are already here" to the end, but at least it would be a coherent policy. My true challenge for the "close the border" types out there is what would you do if the gov't actually made it reasonably doable for even 1/2 the immigrants who come to do so legally? Would you still be singing the "it's not that they're immigrants (read: not white), it's that they're illegal" tune?
How hard is it to get a provincial nomination from Canadian Immigration? I know Canadian Immigration, aside from having skilled-worker immigration programs, has a Provincial Nomination program where a province can grant you permenent residency if you are approved. How hard is it to get one of these nominations and how often does it happen? What chance does an American with no criminal background, college education, and skills (Lifeguard) have of getting nominated?
How many people who consider illegal immigration a huge problem support increasing immigration quotas? A lot of people out there claim that they aren't anti-immigrant, but are only opposed to illegal immigration. If you are one of them, are you strongly in favor of a big increase in the number of legal immigrants allowed per year? If you aren't, who do you think should perform the low skill, low wage jobs that Americans don't want to do? Some of you think there are plenty of Americans to do the jobs that illegal immigrants are doing, as long as the wages for these jobs went up. You're right, of course, but that would take away from labor in other industries. Considering that unemployment has been 6% or less for the past 15 years, and that, by most estimations, illegal immigrants make up at least a few percent of the work force, I really don't think there are enough Americans to fill all the jobs. Add to that that a lot of the unemployed are people who would rather be unemployed than leave the Rust Belt or people who are highly skilled and recently laid off, who find new high skill work quickly, and it becomes even clearer that we need these workers. I agree that getting these workers in based on who can dodge the border patrol best isn't the right way to select them, but these people keep certain industries in America going.
What are the pros and cons for Immigration? I'm going to debate on Wednesday about this. My team is against illegal immigrants having rights. I did not choose the topic, I just have to debate against it. We had to break down the topic into 7 sections. I got morals. What would I say if I was to talk about morals and against immigration? What are some good questions to ask my opponent and please what is some good information on why this it is morally wrong and right to be against immigration or for it? What is good information about against and for immigration? I need to know about both sides so I can fire back if they something. Can someone please help me?
What is the next step in the continuing Illegal immigration debate? Since the elections, We have heard very little about the remaing problem of illegal immigration, AKA, Criminal trespass. This forum has turned into a farce, and it seems that the solution is still a long ways off. What is the next logical step to be taken in order to come to a workable solution?
What are some arguments against preventing illegal immigration in the United States? Its for a debate in a class. I dont think this is an easy side to be on, though I am pro-immigration and pro-keeping rather than deporting. So far, all I can think of is cost of arresting and deporting undocumented people, which is known and very high, compared to the almost impossible to know economic damage illegals cause, if any, considering they use resources and don't (can't) pay taxes, but also provide labor and consumership. I know arguments for preventing illegal immigration, but any arguments against preventing illegal immigration?
How is the immigration procedure at Guarulhos airport? I am Brazilian and my fiancee is Canadian and we are going to Brazil to spend 1 month. I am concerned about the immigration at the airport; I don't want us to get lost from each other during this procedure, since we have to catch another flight just 1:30 hours after our arrival and it will be a big rush. So far I know we don't present ourselves to the officers in the same place; but can we get together easily after we go through them? Is there a "meeting spot" or any other reference spot?
What other problems would solving illegal immigration solve? Everyone always says that so many other problems that we face today would be solved if we just took care of illegal immigration. My question are... What do you think is the solution to immigration? What other problems would your solution solve and how would it solve them?
What philosopher had ideas that could apply to illegal immigration? I am writing a research paper for a philosophy/ethics class and my topic is illegal immigration. I support helping them become citizens rather then deportation. So far I like Kant's theory because it states that humans are an end, never a means for something else so you could say that tearing appart families and deporting people denies humanity. Can anyone else think of a philosopher whose theory supports amnesty for illegal immigrants? Best answer gets the 10 points within the next day
